Visual artists from all disciplines, including duos, can apply to De Ateliers in Amsterdam.

De Ateliers offers participating artists an intensive studio programme with weekly tutoring from an international team of artists and art professionals. Participants receive a studio, stipend and working budget. They have access to several workshops, with experienced workshop supervisors available to provide technical guidance.

An extensive side programme of artist talks, seminars and (international) excursions supplements the studio programme. Woonhuis, an in-house exhibition and try-out space, is collectively curated by the participants of De Ateliers.

who can apply?

  • De Ateliers is open to all visual artists at the beginning of their career, from all countries.
  • De Ateliers is most suited to artists who are highly motivated to develop their artistic practice and ideas through regular, critical feedback within an international studio programme.
  • A formal or completed (art) education is not required.
  • De Ateliers has no age restrictions. Applicants are usually between 20 and 30 years old. We ask artists older than 30 to describe in their application the ways in which they are at the beginning of their career and to explain how De Ateliers would benefit their practice at this stage.
  • Artists who are currently working or have previously worked at one of the Dutch postgraduate institutions—the Jan van Eyck Academie (Maastricht) or the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten (Amsterdam)—are not eligible to apply to De Ateliers.
  • While a good command over English is required for participating in De Ateliers, applicants do not need a IELTS or TOEFL test.

The application fee is € 65. We accept payments made through iDeal | Wero, PayPal or credit card. Please note that payment is non-refundable, both for complete and incomplete applications.

Applicants from and living in the ‘Least Developed Countries’, ‘Low Income Countries which are not LCDs’ and ‘Lower Middle Income Countries and Territories which are not LCDs’ on the DAC lists of 2022-2023 and 2024-2025 are exempt from the application fee.

selection procedure

After the application deadline, all applications are checked for completeness. If any information or documents are missing, our team will reach out to you.

The selection process consists of three rounds:

  • In the FIRST ROUND, in changing compositions, a jury of two tutors and the director review all applications. They select a long list of applicants. The focus during this first round is on the applicants’ portfolios.

  • During the SECOND ROUND all tutors and the director review the applicants on the long list. From this list, they select 24 applicants for an interview. During this round, the jury devotes considerable attention to the artist statement and the motivation.

  • The THIRD ROUND consists of two consecutive interviews with two different juries. One interview focuses on the applicant’s practice, artistic position and idea; the other focuses on the working period at De Ateliers. Interviews take place at De Ateliers or online.

The entire jury process takes approximately 2–3 months. Invitations for interviews, as well as rejection letters, are sent out at the end of March.

De Ateliers receive between 900 and 1100 applications per application cycle. Due to the high volume of applications, De Ateliers is unable to provide personalized feedback to artists who are not selected.

Unsuccessful applicants are welcome to apply again with new work the following year.

jury

The composition of the jury changes from year to year and includes regular tutors, guest tutors and the director of De Ateliers.
