studio practice
The core of De Ateliers’ programme is individual studio practice. During the two-year working period, artists work in their own private studios in De Ateliers’ monumental building in Amsterdam. The studios are bright and spacious. The focus is on experimentation and reflection, and on developing new materials, methods, structures, forms and ideas within each artist’s practice. Participating artists have 24/7 access to the building and their studios.

tuesday visits
Tuesday studio visits have been a cornerstone of De Ateliers’ programme for decades. Every Tuesday, between 11am and 5pm, participants are asked to be present and available in their studios for one-on-one visits by core and guest tutors. There are no sign-up sheets, allowing conversations to last anywhere from ten minutes to several hours, depending on what is needed. These dialogues between emerging artists and more experienced colleagues offer feedback and insight into all aspects of artistic practice, from recent work and ideas to moments of uncertainty, experimentation and failure.
workshops
De Ateliers houses workshops for wood, metal, and synthetics, a soundproof studio for video editing and sound recording, and a dark room for analogue photography. These workshops are supervised by technicians who are available for technical guidance. De Ateliers also offers an art and theory book library. In addition to these in-house facilities, De Ateliers collaborates with a variety of cultural and other institutions in Amsterdam and beyond, offering participants access to knowledge and productional support structures in different areas of specialized expertise.

Artist Talks
Twice a year, De Ateliers hosts a series of lectures known as the Artist Talks. Every autumn and spring, a mix of established and emerging artists are invited to speak about their practice. During the day, these artists visit participants’ studios as guest tutors, but in the evening, the roles are reversed and their own practices become the focus. While every talk is different, hearing about artistic struggles, breakthroughs, obsessions and decisions continues to be both insightful and relatable.
Offspring
Offspring is De Ateliers’ annual exhibition, in which second-year participants present the work they have developed during their time at De Ateliers. As a group, the participants choose a guest curator to work with them on their presentations. The curator collaborates with a designer on the exhibition and catalogue. Participants also develop their own side programme, which can range from performances and live radio to film screenings and lectures.

Woonhuis
Woonhuis is the former caretaker’s home that was converted into a project space in 2023. Spread across three floors and counting almost 200 m², it offers (inter)national artists a space to think, work and exhibit. The exhibition and try out space is collectively curated and run by the participants of De Ateliers. The annual programme includes guest fellowships, often two group exhibitions, an in-depth solo show as well as various public events such as performances, screenings and workshops.
housing
De Ateliers has seven rent-controlled apartments with a total of seventeen rooms available in Amsterdam. Rooms are offered first to participants coming from abroad and secondly to participants already living in the Netherlands.
residence permit
When a participant from outside the EU, EEA or Switzerland is accepted into the programme, De Ateliers (as certified institutional sponsor) will apply for a residence permit at the Immigration and Naturalisation Service. This residence permit is a student visa and is valid for the duration of the working period. De Ateliers covers the costs for the residence permit.
stipend and costs
All participants at De Ateliers receive a yearly stipend. This is financed by the Ateliers Support Fund and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. The stipend for the working year 2026-2027 is €17.916 and provides a basis towards covering living expenses.
With support from Ammodo Art, De Ateliers can offer a yearly production budget to all participants of €2.100.
The yearly costs of participation in the programme are €3.200. This amount is deducted from the stipend.
