Jan Commandeur passed away on April 5 in his hometown of Amsterdam at the age of 69. Commandeur was a participant in De Ateliers from 1977 to 1979, at the time in Haarlem. In the early 1980s, he belonged to the generation of young artists who gave new impetus to painting. In 1981 he was awarded the Royal Subsidy for Modern Painting. His colourful, boisterous abstract paintings were shown at the Venice Biennale in 1982. Commandeur exhibited in venues worldwide, including the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam) and the Museum of Modern Art (New York).
