Dutch artist Ton van Summeren passed away on May 29th, 2017, in his hometown Amsterdam. Van Summeren (b.1953, Oss, Netherlands) was a participant at De Ateliers from 1976 to 1978, together with a.o. Bert Boogaard and Marlene Dumas. In the 1980s, Van Summeren exhibited with prominent galleries such as The Living Room (Amsterdam) and Juana de Aizpuru (Madrid). His work, combining painting with photography and text, is based on enigmatic relationships between scientific knowledge and visual representation, praised by Artforum as “studies into the sublime”. His monumental murals from recent years often were made in commission. Work of Ton van Summeren is included in the collections of Rijksmuseum and Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and De Lakenhal in Leiden.
