Grace Ndiritu (b.1982, Birmingham, UK), lives in between places

Central themes in the performances, films, architectural spaces and social practices of British-Kenyan artist Grace Ndiritu are shamanic ritual, meditation, healing, esoteric beliefs, and care. She has worked with museums on restitution of looted objects, decolonization, and reactivating the sacredness of art spaces. After her residency at De Ateliers, she lived for six years amongst tree-dwellers in Argentina, permaculture communities in New Zealand, Thai and Tibetan monks and the Findhorn community in Scotland. In 2017 she started her own community called The Ark Center for Interdisciplinary Experimentation. In 2018 she launched her fashion and economic research project COVERSLUT©, where customers pay what they can for items made with young artists and migrants. Her ongoing program to transform art institutions, ‘Healing the Museum’, begun in 2012. In recent years, solo and group exhibitions were presented at British Art Show (2021 to 2023), Wellcome Collection, London (2022), Gropius Bau, Berlin (2022), Kunsthal Gent (2021), Nottingham Contemporary, UK (2021) and international film festivals like the 72nd Berlinale. She is also the winner of The Jarman Film Award 2022. Grace Ndiritu will be having a mid-career survey entitled Healing The Museum at SMAK, Ghent from 1 April to 10 September 2023. The exhibition will include a new monographic publication published by Motto Books for the special occasion.
