Artist Talk Raimundas Malašauskas

Raimundas Malašauskas (b.1973, Vilnius, Lithuania), lives in Brussels, Belgium

Raimundas Malašauskas has a distinctively reflexive approach to writing and curating, drawing from various modes of communication. His questioning of the exhibition concept often results in unpredictable, playful projects. ‘Hypnotic Show’ for example, his longest-lasting project (from 2008 on), is an exhibition that takes place through hypnosis. From 1995 to 2006, Malašauskas worked at the Contemporary Art Centre in Vilnius, where he produced the weekly television show CAC TV, an experimental merger of commercial television and contemporary art, as well as the IX Baltic Triennial in 2005. From 2007 to 2008, he was a visiting curator at California College of the Arts, San Francisco, and a curator-at-large of Artists Space, New York. In 2007, he co-wrote the libretto of Cellar Door, an opera by Loris Gréaud produced in Paris. Malašauskas curated many thematic exhibitions worldwide, including ‘Sculpture of the Space Age’ (David Roberts Art Foundation, London, 2009), ‘Into the Belly of a Dove’ (Museo Rufino Tamayo, Mexico City, 2010), ‘Repetition Island’ (Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, 2010), ‘Oo’ (Lithuanian and Cyprus Pavilions, Venice Biennale, 2013), ‘Hypnotic Show’ (dOCUMENTA 2013), ‘Tomorrow night I walked to a dark black star’ (Universidad Di Tella, Buenos Aires, 2014), ‘In My Previous Life I Wanted to Be a Tablet’ (Instituto de Vision, Bogota, 2015), 9th Liverpool Biennale (2017) and ‘Meeting Points 8’ (Cairo, Brussels, Beirut, 2017). His most recent projects are ‘trust & confusion’, an eight month long live art exhibition at Tai Kwun Contemporary, Hong Kong (2021) and Mars Returns, a 14 hour long event at Mykolas Zilinskas Gallery, Kaunas (2022). His book ‘Paper Exhibition’ with collected writings was published by Sternberg Press.
