Artist talk Moshekwa Langa
Moshekwa Langa (b. 1975, Bakenberg, Limpopo, South-Africa), lives in Amsterdam
The studio practice of South-African artist Moshekwa Langa spans drawing, painting, installation, video, and photography, culling materials from his immediate surroundings. Simultaneously poetic and emotional, Langa creates a visual language to convey personal histories as a way to grapple with the often slippery meaning of things. Langa came to prominence in the late 1990s when he participated in major art biennales in Johannesburg (1997), Istanbul (1997), Havana (1997), São Paulo (1998 and 2010), Gwangju (2000), Venice (2003 and 2009), Lyon (2011), Berlin (2018) and Dakar (2018). Recent solo exhibitions took place at MAXXI (Rome, 2005), Modern Art Oxford (2007), Kunsthalle Bern (2011), Krannert Art Museum (Champaign, 2013), and ifa Galleries (Berlin, 2014). The artist is represented by Stevenson (Cape Town, Johannesburg, Amsterdam) and Andrew Kreps (New York).
