Artist Talk Jessica Stockholder
This event is sold out
Jessica Stockholder (b.1959, Seattle, USA), lives in Chicago
For over 25 years now, American artist Jessica Stockholder has been celebrated for site-specific sculptures and installations that challenge boundaries, blurring the distinction among painting, sculpture and environment, and even breaching gallery walls by extending beyond windows and doors. She shares with Matisse an interest in color and how organizing systems can fail and become eccentric. Within her sprawling constructions, the artist draws attention to the aesthetic and formal qualities of often overlooked quotidian items, while avoiding symbolism and storytelling. Her solo exhibitions include Contemporary Austin (Texas, 2018), Smart Museum (Chicago, 2015), Musée d’Art Moderne (Saint-Etienne, 2012), Museo Reina Sofia (Madrid, 2010) and MOMA PS1 (New York, 2006). The artist is represented by Mitchell-Innes & Nash (New York), 1301PE (Los Angeles), Kavi Gupta Gallery (Chicago), Barbara Edwards Contemporary (Toronto), Carreras Mugica (Bilbao), Galerie Nächst St. Stephan (Vienna), Galerie Nathalie Obadia (Paris) and Galleria Raffaella Cortese (Milan). The exhibition ‘Jessica Stockholder: Stuff Matters’ is on view at Centraal Museum, Utrecht, from April 19th to September 1st, 2019.
