Artist Talk Maaike Schoorel
Maaike Schoorel (b.1973, Santpoort, Netherlands), lives in Amsterdam
The works of Dutch painter Maaike Schoorel can be perceived in relation to traditional pictorial genres such as still life, portraiture and landscape, but in their radical opposition to immediate recognizability they are contemporary just as well. In her apparently ‘empty’ canvasses, depictions surface only slowly and gradually after long and pensive observation. Solo shows of Maaike Schoorel were held at the Gemeentemuseum (The Hague, 2017), Fondazione Meme (Rome, 2016), Mendes Wood (São Paulo, 2013) and Frans Hals Museum (Haarlem, 2012). The artist exhibitis regularly with the galleries who represent her work: Galerie Stigter Van Doesburg (Amsterdam), Maureen Paley (London), Marc Foxx (Los Angeles) and Galerie Sofie Van de Velde (Antwerp).
